What you’ll see: Typical 7-night routes round trip from Seattle or Vancouver. Some ships make one-way trips between one of these ports and Juneau or Anchorage via the Alaska Inside Passage, a series of connecting waterways between thousands of forested islands. Fishing towns and the occasional small town dot the coast, but otherwise it’s all about nature. Top spots on the weeklong route include Glacier Bay National Park, Tracy Arm Fjord, or (for mostly small vessels) Misty Fjords National Monument. Much of the coastline is wilderness, with snow-capped mountain peaks, glaciers and rainforests. What not to miss: From the deck of your ship, look for calving glaciers as the ice breaks off and splashes into the water. A “flight horn” tour by small plane or helicopter offers an aerial view of glaciers, waterfalls and forested mountains. A cruise excursion includes a helicopter ride over Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier, followed by a two-hour glacier hike with the chance to duck down and drink from freshly melted snow. Kayaking trips and forest walks are also a must.

Best time to go: May to September (rest of the year is cold and rainy).

The best side of the ship: Once in the fjords, the ships turn enough to ensure that everyone gets a good view.

So you think you want to take a cruise?

First off, let me just say you’re going to love this. I’ve been cruising for over 25 years, on almost every line there is, and I can tell you it’s a wonderful way to travel.

It’s not for everyone, of course. There are plenty of people who have tried it once or twice and aren’t just fans. There are also plenty of “never cruisers” – people who, for a variety of reasons, never even think about getting on a ship for vacation.

Plus, you’ll find cruise lines all over the map when it comes to price points. Just as with land-based resorts and hotels, there are cruise lines for those on the tightest budgets and cruise lines that cater to those for whom money is no object.

An overview of cruise lines

As mentioned above, there are dozens of cruise lines. At last count, I had traveled with 41 different cruise companies, and I still hadn’t hit every major brand—despite years of my full-time job reviewing cruise ships.

One thing to understand right off the bat is that the cruise line listings you’ll find here on TPG and other travel sites include companies that offer an incredible range of experiences.

When you think of “cruise ship,” you might think of the giant floating megaresorts you see in television commercials like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line—the kind of ships that carry thousands of passengers. Take and all kinds of gee-whiz fun on their top deck. But the cruise world also includes companies that operate much smaller, more intimate vessels that carry only a few dozen to a few hundred people. The environment of these ships is completely different. They are like little boutique hotels that float around.

If an intimate vacation experience is more your style, you may want to gravitate toward cruise lines that operate smaller, yacht-like vessels such as SeaDream Yacht Club. In addition, you’ll find adventure-oriented “expedition” cruise companies that offer a completely different type of cruising — one that involves sailing on small, rugged boats designed to explore the likes of Antarctica. There are also cruise companies that specialize in ships that travel on rivers and even lines that only operate ships.

If you hear someone say they’ll never take a cruise because the ships are “too big” or “too crowded,” you’ve met someone who doesn’t know what’s out there.

You can travel on a large, lavish ship carrying 5,000 people or a small, yacht-like ship with only 50 people and everything in between.

After a few decades of covering the industry, I like to break things down into the six categories you’ll find below and (in some cases) several subcategories—each catering to a different type of vacationer.
