                We traveled on Anthem of the Seas on one of the first sessions outside the UK. We have now cruised 7 times with Royal Caribbean, the last being on Freedom of the Seas in 2016. This was our first time sailing on Anthem of the Seas and we were excited to be back on a Royal Caribbean ship.

Anthem of the Seas is a Quantum Class ship and has a maximum capacity of 4905 passengers, has a crew of 1500 and has been cruising since 2015. We had wanted to travel on a Quantum Class ship for a long time and were delighted when Royal Caribbean announced their 4-day Ocean Gateway cruise from Southampton. The dates also coincided with Carol’s retirement and birthday and we thought this ship would be ideal to celebrate both!

King of the seas

I went on this trip with my then girlfriend, now wife, so this review represents the experience of traveling as a couple. Our special itinerary aboard Monarch of the Seas took us round-trip from Los Angeles, visiting San Diego and Catalina Island in California and Ensenada, Mexico.

The shuttle service from LAX to the cruise ship terminal in San Pedro took about 45 minutes. After checking in and getting our guest cards, we boarded the ship to explore. After some time our luggage was delivered to our stateroom, at which point we also got access to our room.

STATE ROOM ACCOMMODATION

Although Monarch of the Seas was one of the largest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet at the time, our budget-minded interior stateroom was much smaller than we expected. It was smaller than the interior stateroom we’ve had on Princess Cruises in the past, as well as the ocean view room we’ve had on Carnival Victory.

The stateroom itself was barely the width of three twin beds placed side by side and the very modest CRT television hanging on the wall was disappointing. The room still offered everything a traveler would need, but investing in a larger suite might be worth it for families or individuals who want more space. The new ships, like Quantum of Seas, have the largest staterooms on average of any ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet.

With the pandemic from that cruise late 2019, I was able to visit my favorite beach town of Byron Bay in Australia and Bangkok in Thailand for a weekend in early March 2020. . The past year has been life-changing.

The dining options and entertainment facilities at RC made it an easy option. Unless you’re inspired by Chow Yun Fat in God of Gamblers, a Jinting’s Dream Cruise would be the more obvious cruise option for you.

Room Since I’m going on a cruise on RC to get out of my cabin fever, a stateroom with a balcony overlooking the open ocean is a must for me. On Quantum of the Seas, you can choose from 4 general room types, namely Interior (without windows), Ocean View (with windows), Balcony and Suite. Did some research online, and some cruise specific websites have strong recommendations to pick rooms between decks 8 to 12 and in the middle of the cruise since you’ll be between the two elevator lobbies.

Ocean View Balcony Staterooms measure 253 square feet, and sleep 4 guests with 2 on a king bed and sofa bed. Although I would discourage against having 4 adults in the room as it can be a tight space.

The balcony is definitely a lifesaver, and it’s the only place on the cruise where you can afford to bask in the sun without wearing a face mask. Kudos to the cruise crew, wearing a face mask is strictly enforced throughout the cruise, except when you’re in the swimming pools or on the Flow Rider.

The room comes with a good sized toilet with a standing shower. Remember that unless you book a suite, which comes with some lovely L’Occitane toiletries, make sure you bring your own. Unless you don’t mind the budget 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash provided by Cruise.

Note that all rooms are serviced and sanitized twice daily by a dedicated attendant, including an evening turndown service. My room attendant was challenged to do a different towel animal each day, and she did not disappoint offering elephants, bears, birds, dogs and more!

To start the restaurant, you have to decide if you’re happy with all the free meals on the cruise, or if you’re good enough to top up for the specialty dining that takes you to a special dining restaurant for lunch. While the food here didn’t blow my mind, it certainly wasn’t bad as a complimentary meal concept. I also appreciate that the lunch and dinner menu rotates quite a bit each day, so diners won’t get bored easily.

If you are a buffet person, Windjammer is the place for you. Serving a wide spread of dining options throughout the day with ocean views as it is located high up on deck fourteen of the cruise. That said, I didn’t enjoy my meal here, both times going back to the main dining room for another meal. It’s a bit too busy, too stuffy, and lacks the sophistication of the main dining room.

In between meals, there are other complimentary dining options that you can check out throughout the day. Highly recommend you go to Ceplex Doghouse for some good American sausages. Skip the bread, and simply top with your choice of sausage along with the onion. I used to come back here every day for a walk.

Each night, some type or production show was presented in the main theater aboard Monarch of the Seas. As Norwich notes of the similar ship Explorer of the Seas, the nightly entertainment “was topped with comedians”, accompanied by singers and dancers.

FlowRider is only available on select time slots from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 16:00.

Pro tip: We recommend getting there a little earlier for the afternoon session. There are fewer people in the queue, probably because of lunch hours.

Bigger is definitely not better – the frustration of the oceans.

This is our 5th, and almost certainly, our last RCL cruise.

Definitely not big on Oceans of Despair (formerly called Wonder).

They have shrunk the rooms, especially the smaller bathrooms, so they can cram more room (rent) into the plane. Unfortunately, they didn’t increase the size of anything else, just added overpriced non-inclusive restaurants.

The result now is that it’s an overcrowded, frustrating ship.

And what happened to the ponds?? For some reason known only to the boss, they’ve taken out the good sized pools like the previous ships and replaced it with a giant hole! Instead, they’ve added bathtub-sized micro-pools around the hole, where sweaty old men can be seen pushing up against children. Not at all appropriate or safe.

I fully understand that the owners of RCL probably haven’t had their multi-million bonuses for the past few years, so they are working hard to screw their customers for every penny this year!

They add a ‘mandatory’ gratuity to your bill every day – without telling you – so you need to check. They literally take tips from you for everything. I guess that saves them from having to pay the staff themselves.

To be fair, the staff – with a few rude exceptions (the ones you’re still tipping!) – are generally excellent, especially the dining room staff and some of the venues.

I received an invoice with all the details regarding my cruise in 2023.

At the time, travel out of Australia was still on hold due to the pandemic.

The deal offered was fantastic, Balcony Stateroom 0% Obstructed View + $400 OBC for 2 people for a total cost of $2898.34.

All of the above are documented in the initial invoice.

We have cruised with Royal Caribbean many times in the past and I recently booked a five night cruise from Brisbane to Sydney and Eden NSW as we specifically wanted to visit Eden. Two weeks after booking and deposit I received an email from Royal Caribbean stating that the cruise would only stop in Sydney and not Aden. I then asked Royal Caribbean to refund my deposit because they had changed the itinerary and they told me it was a non-refundable deposit. So I asked them for credit for it..

I hardly spent any time with my children on my long-awaited vacation, because all my time was spent trying to get us a room.

RCLs are first in line to charge your credit card but there is no customer service when you need help, and you are stuck and helpless when you are on board. .

I contacted the company several times but they never responded so now I am resorting to social media.

This is not the company it used to be, save your money and book elsewhere.

Don’t trust Royal Caribbean.

I should say upfront, don’t trust Royal Caribbean. I asked for proper papers for boarding. They asked that everything was found but during the checkup they rejected one of our documents. I showed them what I got from Royal Caribbean, the officer said they gave wrong information. Royal Caribbean shipped but it is incorrect and they still took my money. This is clearly misleading. Don’t trust them.

First cruise experience

This was our first cruise and there were a few points that didn’t go as smoothly as it should have. We sailed August 19th on Rhapsody of the Seas from Limassol on a 7 night cruise to the Greek Islands and Israel. On boarding, we were not given our stateroom cards which caused unnecessary delays in boarding. After boarding the ship we had to provide a bank card to cover any additional expenses incurred during the cruise. Where we were not told that the company would charge us a holding fee! This is where our problems started. My bank froze my card because they believed the transaction was fraudulent. Due to the high cost of internet / wifi on board I didn’t know the cost until I got ashore, and when I saw the money I didn’t know what it was for so couldn’t agree to the charge and I Had to be forced. Wait until I get back on board to find out what it was. That means I can.

A cruise vacation is filled with fun activities, fine dining and exotic ports to explore. With so many possibilities, a mistake along the way is not uncommon. The key is to avoid pitfalls.

I reached out to my blog readers to hear some of the worst cruise mistakes they’ve made. These pitfalls are great lessons for the rest of us to learn about and avoid on our own journeys.

Taking online reviews very seriously

This next cruise fail is a big pet peeve of mine, which is taking one person’s opinion about something as gospel.

WanderPam almost canceled her cruise plan based on negative reviews online!

“The worst thing I did was canceling my Explorer cruise because I took the negative reviews so seriously. So glad I didn’t because we had the most amazing 2 week cruise ever. was!”

There’s nothing wrong with consulting the opinions of others (this entire blog post is about opinions), but don’t treat cruise ship reviews like you would a Yelp review.

Cruise ships offer so many varied and experiential vacations that no single experience can be fully evaluated. The cruise is a “create your own adventure” experience by design. You can sit by the pool every day of the cruise and never do a single activity, while the guy next to you can zip line, crochet, belly flop and dance the night away. In short, we all travel differently.

My favorite way to explain why online cruise ship reviews should never be used as the basis for anything other than entertainment is the Great Wall of China.

If you do an internet search for “The Great Wall of China”, one of mankind’s greatest achievements, it only has a 4.2 star rating on Google!

No ship in the fleet is inherently defective, and no ship is infallible. Find out what the ship offers (and doesn’t offer), and make the right decision based on what you’re looking for in a cruise vacation.

Not considering holiday schedules

Cruises are offered year-round, including major holidays.

Conneraven booked a cruise on Brilliance of the Seas not realizing it was over the Easter holiday, which meant there were more children on board than she expected.

“Our biggest mistake was not looking at the holiday calendar before booking the cruise. If we had known it was going to be Easter, we wouldn’t have booked that date. We would have focused more on the holiday. are more “adult oriented” as opposed to “family oriented” like Halloween and New Year’s Eve.

You might be wondering why he didn’t cancel and rebook the non-holiday cruise? He committed a double mistake by booking a non-refundable cruise fare, which is one of my pitfalls to avoid.

Aside from the kids issue, not looking at the calendar means you could end up paying more for hotels or airfare because vacations will add to the cost of those events as well.

Don’t research anything

Our next cruise failure is one I hear about all the time from first-time cruisers and it’s not learning about their ship, or the places they’re going.

Geoff P. told how on their first cruise, they didn’t research anything to maximize their vacation.

“We definitely had a great time, but learned to do more research to get the most out of our experience. Did a lot of research and planning ahead of time for our second cruise and now our upcoming third. And it’s much better.”

Knowing about your cruise ship, as well as the ports you visit, will benefit you in the long run. Not only can a little exploration of what your cruise ship has to offer save you time, it can reveal activities and opportunities you might not have known about.

Often, I hear from cruisers who wish they knew about a particular activity, excursion or deal, and the key to not missing out on any of this is pre-cruise research.

Knowledge is power, so take advantage of your time before Cruise starts learning more and more!

Going to port without a plan

Each of your ship’s ports of call offers something different, and in many cases there are opportunities to explore the history, culture or natural beauty of these places.

In the case of SteveinSC, not knowing what ports have to offer leads to a poor experience.

“My first two cruises, on our stops, I just got off the boat and circled the port area. Big mistake. I wasn’t taking advantage of all the stops that were offered!!! On my second cruise, I Started. Booking excursions and getting taxis and really going out. Totally changed how I looked at, not just the itinerary, but the whole cruise.
